The Complete Guide to the Pokémon Sudoku Phenomenon

If you have spent any time in the Pokémon community since late 2023, you have seen a screenshot of a 3×3 grid with type icons, Pokéballs, and a 7/9 score. That is PokeDoku.

What is PokeDoku?

A fan-made daily puzzle that turned 25+ years of Pokémon knowledge into competitive logic

Definition

"PokeDoku is a daily guessing game where players must input a set of 9 unique Pokémon which agree with a given set of characteristics for each row and column in a 3×3 grid."

— Kotaku / Ocean of Games

It is not official Nintendo software. The official site keeps it simpler: "PokeDoku is a free daily Pokémon trivia game. Fill the 3×3 grid by choosing a Pokémon that matches the row and column categories. Each pick counts once, so think strategically to complete all 9 cells."

The Famous One

PokeDoku.com

Grid Guessing Game

3×3 grid. Rows and columns have conditions like "Fire Type," "Generation 5," "Evolves with Stone." Find one Pokémon per cell that satisfies both.

Pokedoku.io

Number Replacement Game

9×9 Sudoku grid where instead of numbers 1–9, you use Pokémon characters. Literally Pokémon-themed Sudoku. No row/column category mechanic.

This article focuses on the first, which is 100× more popular.

"PokeDoku combines Pokémon trivia with sudoku-style logic in a creative way, providing fans a daily challenge they can play in their browser."

Origin Story: Ryan and Joe

From Immaculate Grid to Pokémon obsession

The game was created by two Pokémon fans, Ryan and Joe, known online as Doku_Games. The concept was heavily inspired by the baseball grid game Immaculate Grid, which went viral in summer 2023.

Ryan and Joe applied the same logic to Pokémon. Dexerto wrote the first major explainer: "Pokémon players have a new obsession and it's called PokeDoku, an online puzzle game that has been growing in popularity since its release in September."

Gen 8

Each cell = intersection of row + column. Find one Pokémon that fits both.

The Rules That Matter

1

Nine Unique Pokémon

"Each pick counts once, so think strategically." You cannot reuse Charizard in two cells.

2

Nine Chances Total

Early version: 9 guesses for 9 cells — no margin for error. Modern version more forgiving on Easy; Hard still punishes.

3

Deduction, Not Just Recall

You deduce answers using Pokémon types shown on either axis. Similar to regular Sudoku logic but with type intersections.

4

Rarity Scoring

Rarer pick (lower % of players who chose it) = better score. Pikachu for Electric + Gen 1 = 90% common. Alolan Geodude = 0.5% — brilliant.

Classic Example (Dexerto)

If a square aligns with both Normal-type and Ghost-type, the answer can only be either Hisuian Zorua or Hisuian Zoroark. That's an extreme case with only two possible answers, forcing you to save those Pokémon for that cell.

Why It's Hard

The Numbers

1025+

171+

Unique Type Combos

~90

Fire-Types Alone

Single Type

Easy. Fire type has ~90 Pokémon. Plenty of room.

Intersections

Brutal fast. Fire + Fairy? That was only 3 Pokémon for years. Skeledirge line changed things.

Triple Constraints

Master Puzzles: "Fire Type" + "Gen 2" + "Learns Flamethrower." You need to know movepools.

Strategy: 9/9 Consistently

The Veteran System

1

Scan for the choke point

Find the cell with the fewest possible answers. Ghost/Normal, Dragon/Ice with a Gen restriction, Baby + Dragon type. Solve that first while you still have all Pokémon available.

2

Don't waste unicorns

If you use Azurill for Fairy + Baby, you can't use it for Water + Baby. Save flexible Pokémon like Eevee, Mew, or Rotom for harder intersections.

3

Think about form changes

Alolan, Galarian, Hisuian Forms count as different type combos. Alolan Marowak is Fire/Ghost — a lifesaver. Hisuian Typhlosion too. Wormadam has three cloaks with different types.

4

Use the 20% rule for rarity

For completion, pick the most obvious. For a good rarity score to flex, pick the 3rd or 4th most obvious. Don't pick the super obscure one first — you might need it elsewhere.

5

Know your trap categories

Color

Pokedex color, not actual appearance. Charizard is Red, not Orange.

Egg Groups

Most players don't know them. Keep Bulbapedia open.

Learnset

"Learns Volt Tackle" = Pikachu family only. "Dragon Ascent" = Rayquaza only. Gimmes if you know.

6

Build a mental bank of versatile Pokémon

Mew

Every type via TM, Gen 1, Mythical

Rotom

Changes type with forms

Eevee Line

Covers many types + evo methods

Deoxys

Formes, Mythical, Psychic

Community and Culture

Infinitely shareable

Twitter / X

Daily score grids with colored boxes (green = correct, red = wrong) like Wordle. People post 9/9 with average rarity 12%.

Reddit

r/pokedoku and r/pokemon daily threads. Stunkfish subreddit and Smogon submit custom puzzles published at midnight EST.

IRL Flexes

Played on Samsung Smart Fridge, Apple Watch via "Hidden" browser, and yes — someone did it in VR.

Streamer Content

Twitch "PokeDoku race with chat" where chat tries to backseat the rarest picks.

Stealth Learning Tool

Kids memorizing type matchups for competitive play suddenly learn that Empoleon is Water/Steel, not Water/Ice. Adults returning after Gen 3 realize there are now Fairy types. PokeDoku teaches without teaching.

The Other PokeDoku

Pokémon Sudoku 9×9

This version is literal Sudoku: a 9×9 grid divided into nine 3×3 subgrids where instead of numbers 1 through 9, you'll be using different Pokémon characters.

Each Row

9 different Pokémon

Each Column

9 different Pokémon

Each 3×3 Box

9 different Pokémon

Played on sites like pokedoku.io, pokedoku.co, HahaGames, and Paraulogic. Great for younger kids who know Pokémon faces but not competitive trivia. Difficulty controlled by pre-filled cells.

Key difference: It does NOT have the row/column category mechanic. Many sites incorrectly mix descriptions of both games. Community consensus: the 3×3 category game from pokedoku.com is "the" PokeDoku.

Creating Your Own Puzzle

The site accepts community submissions

1

Pick a theme

"All Eeveelutions," "Starters only," "Legendaries."

2

Balance difficulty

Aim for 3 easy, 4 medium, 2 hard. Don't make all 9 cells 1-answer cells — that's frustrating.

3

Avoid impossible intersections

Check Bulbapedia. Fire + Water wasn't impossible (Volcanion), but Fairy + Poison was impossible until Galarian Weezing.

4

Test for uniqueness loopholes

"Blue + Water" has 80 answers — too easy unless other cells restrict the pool.

5

Include one fun fact cell

Teach something — e.g., "Learns Sketch" = Smeargle only. Players learn and feel smart.
